Comment on devient ce que l’on est.

My translation of a small excerpt from a book by Philippe Sollers called “The Life Divine”

How one becomes what one is. Bizarre formula: it turns being and becoming inside out. On principle, we’re born, we are, and then we become something other than what we are. That’s life, as we say, as if that said anything. “Die and become!”— the formula is well known. But to become what we are (in discovering, thus, little by little, that we are criminal, idiotic, negligible, wise, holy, or, who knows, God himself) remains mysterious. Nothing tells us what we’re capable of. One goes through many situations and events that one isn’t. We don’t inevitably become what we are. False directions abound. That’s why most of us humans become something we’re not, and we are violently encouraged in these directions by the familial and social illusions that span the ages. Continue reading
